Glucocorticoids, like prednisone, can also be used, especially in the acute phase, but are not the first choice of doctors for long-term treatment. They have several important side effects, such as an increased risk of developing a serious infection. They can be administered by the doctor directly into the painful joint, by intramuscular injection or at home in the form of tablets.
